A committal service is the closing part of a traditional funeral: the procession from the chapel or church to the cemetery, the words spoken at the grave, and the final farewell.

Some families choose a graveside service instead of a chapel funeral altogether. Everything takes place at the cemetery, usually shorter and simpler, with readings, prayers, music, and military honors included if you wish. It suits families who want something quieter, and it is equally available to families who have chosen cremation, with the urn interred at the close of the service.

Most cemeteries also require an outer burial container, often called a vault or grave liner, to keep the grave from settling over time. Requirements differ from cemetery to cemetery, and we will confirm what yours calls for before you purchase anything.

A monument is usually chosen after the funeral, when there is time to think it over. There is no rush, and no family should feel pushed into that decision during the arrangement conference.

We can help you understand what your cemetery permits — upright monuments, flat markers, bronze plates, single or companion designs — and coordinate with a monument dealer on the stone, the lettering, and the setting date.
